Endorsee Interview with Chris Day of Stevenage Football Club
What size gloves do you wear?
Size 10
What is your preferred choice of gloves?
I prefer to wear a roll finger or negative cut style of glove – I tend to like the extra latex grip feel.
How many pair of gloves do you take to a match?
Generally one pair to warm up and one match pair. I often carry a spare pair of new gloves just in case.
How often do you change your gloves?
I tend to start with a new match pair which I can get up to 7 games uses out of. In the mean time I wear a training pair and then incorporate the match pair into training.
Any tips on glove care?
Before I wear a pair in a match or training I wash them thoroughly in luke warm water, repeating this twice. This removes the soap from the latex which is added on production to preserve the gloves. When you wash them this is the yellow colour the water turns. With my match pair I always use them once in training to break them in.
How can I preserve the life of my glove?
After training I always wash the gloves in the shower. This keeps them tip top for the next day and I always air dry them hanging up. Always use separate gloves for training and matches and try to use the correct glove for the surface and conditions you are playing in.
How do you warm up for a match?
I always start 45 minutes before kick off with some stretching and jogging working up to some short strides. After this I work through handling, taking crosses and kicking. I like to get back into the dressing room 15 minutes before kick off to get focused.
Have you got any special preparations before a game?
Always turn up on time and make sure you have the correct kit and gloves including studs to suit conditions.
What do you eat before a game?
Always eat approximately 3 hours before a game. I eat beans on toast, cereal, fruit and yogurt. 48 hours before a game I eat lots of pasta and as a professional abstain from alcohol and drink plenty of water.
Do you have any superstitions?
When we win I always keep the same warm up and wear the same colour kit. A defeat can result in a change of kit and tweaking of my warm up.
